Just north of Poitiers is the Futuroscope theme park. The site (131 acres) is packed full of animations, technology and multimedia experiences to provide an exciting day out for all the family.
Giants of the Sky
From Easter until October Les Géants du Ciel (Giants of the Sky), a magnificent bird show, is held in the remains of the Chateau. As well as eagles, hawks and owls that you would expect to see in a falconry display, there are also more unusual species such as vultures, storks and macaws.
More like a park than a zoo, La Vallée des Singes (Monkey Valley) has no cages or barriers but over a dozen islands for its residents. In the 16 hectares you will find over 30 species of primate and the regular feeding times provide an opportunity for a close up view and to learn more about each animal.
Réserve de la Haute-Touche
The Réserve de la Haute-Touche (Haute-Touch wildlife reserve) is the biggest zoological park in France and is home to more than 1000 animals from 5 continents. Since 2002 the Reserve has been developing a breeding programme for endangered species.
Near to La Haute-Touche is the château Azay-le-Ferron. Built in the 15th century and then added to until the 17th century, it is similar in style to the Loire Valley châteaux. The château is surrounded by landscaped gardens and parkland.
There are guided tours of the château as well as a variety of events throughout the year.
In a tropical environment, La Planète des Crocodiles (Crocodile Planet) houses more than 200 crocodiles from different parts of the world. After visiting the nursery where the crocodiles are born, take a look at crocodiles from the different geographical areas.
